Metasound, could be a "reflective" sound, a sound that we use in a way, that "talks" about sound, about sound's cultural nature.
Prefix "meta-" comes from the Greek word "μετα-". In social sciences it means that a term turns to a reflective term; "metatheory" is the theory about theories. Meta-learning means learming about the way we learn. Also, the well known "metasearch", is search into searches.
That's the place where we borrow this made-up-word, so that we can describe our sonic vision (or perhaps hearing?)...

Metasound could be a sound of (post)modernity! Could be a restrospective, remixed, reflective, recreated sound, that suggests rehearing, resounding, recommunicating...

Μεταήχος (metasound) θα μπορούσε να είναι ένας «αναστοχαστικός» ήχος, ένας ήχος που χρησιμοποιείται έτσι ώστε να μιλάει για τον ήχο, για την πολιτισμική φύση του ήχου.
Το πρόθεμα «μετα-» δεν προσδιορίζει χρονικά τη λέξη. Στις κοινωνικές επιστήμες, σημαίνει ότι ένας όρος γίνεται αναστοχαστικός: η «μεταθεωρία», για παράδειγμα, είναι μια θεωρία που εξετάζει τις θεωρίες. «Μεταμάθηση» είναι να μαθαίνεις πως να μαθαίνεις. Είναι γνωστό επίσης, ότι η "μεταέρευνα" (metasearch) είναι μια έρευνα για τις έρευνες, μια μηχανή που ψάχνει στα αποτελέσματα των μηχανών (αναζήτησης)..
Από κεί δανειζόμαστε την δυνητική λέξη, ώστε να περιγράψουμε το ηχητικό μας όραμα ( ή μήπως άκουσμα;)...
Ένας μεταήχος θα μπορούσε να είναι ένας ήχος της (μετα)μοντερνικότητας! Θα μπορούσε να είναι ένας ήχος που επανέρχεται στο παρελθόν, αναμεμιγμένος, αναστοχαστικός, ξαναφτιαγμένος, που μας προτείνει την επανακρόαση, την επανήχηση, την επανεπικοινωνία...

While the participant of the Music Conference was presenting statistics for each kind of music, all audiences of a region were divided numerically to genres on the board: rock, classical, jazz, alternative, popular, rebetico, Byzantine, etc, and, of course, at the end "Other". As I didn't recognize straight away where metasound group could find its place on that board and - with a sense of humor - I asked Nikos "what kind of music does metasound group play?"

"Other" he mentioned smiling after cheking the table! "Probably 'Other'"!
So that's our music genre! The one that postmodernically refers to all the other genres, stepping with one foot in the classroom and the other on stage! So, "Other" Music...

Καθώς ο ομιλητής στο Συνέδριο για τη Μουσική παρουσίαζε στατιστικές για κάθε είδος μουσικής, διαμοίραζε το κοινό μιας περιοχής αριθμητικά σε είδη, σε έναν πίνακα: rock, jazz, clasic, alternative, blues, popular, rebetico και άλλα, και φυσικά στο τέλος "Other" (άλλα). Καθώς δυσκολεύτηκα να να αναγνωρίσω ευθέως πού ακριβώς θα μπορούσε να τοποθετηθεί η "ομάδα μεταήχων" ρώτησα το Νίκο - αστειευόμενος περισσότερο: «τι μουσική παίζω με την ομάδα μεταήχων άραγε;»

«Other» μου απάντητησε χαμογελαστά αφού περιεργάστηκε τον πίνακα. «Προφανώς Other»!
Ώστε αυτό είναι το μουσικό μας είδος! Ένα είδος που μεταμοντερνικά μπορεί να αναφέρεται σε όλα τα άλλα είδη, πατώντας με το ένα πόδι στην τάξη διδασκαλίας και το άλλο στην σκηνή... Μουσική «Other» λοιπόν, άλλωστε υπάρχει ως κατηγορία και στις web communities, όπως μου είπε ο Θωμάς...

Υ.Γ. Ένα μήνα περίπου μετά όταν δημιουργήσαμε το myspace της Ομάδας, αναπόφευφκτα δηλώσαμε στο λογισμικό ότι παίζουμε "Other"...

"Those involved with sound and music should focus on listening, on the soundscape and not ignore sounds, being themselves experts in the field. When it comes to sound, prominence should be given to learning, to children, to education" he told us.

So we' ve got to focus on "sound education", I could say as a synopsis of what Murrey Schafer told us in the 1st Conference of Acoustic Ecology in Kerkyra. He straightforwardly urged us to turn to sound, first and foremost inside the classroom.

"Quiet, teacher, so we can hear the bird sing" is an emblematic phrase, has been handed down to me with plenty of care by Yannis, a theacher, but also with a PHd in Music Education, while I was first stepping into the field.

The young kazantzakian hero, that says this phrase, claimed his soundscape courageously. At the very same place, the school, Schafer is now calling us to return to the sound "institutionally". Not to ignore our "village" sound, especially now that - McLuhan talked about it as early as the 60s - our village has become "global"...

"Οι άνθρωποι του ήχου και της μουσικής, πρέπει να εστιάζουν πραγματικά στο άκουσμα, στο ηχοτοπίο, να μην αγνοούν τους ήχους, αφού αυτοί είναι οι "ειδικοί". Στα ζητήματα του ήχου, προέχει να δόσουμε έμφαση στην εκπαίδευση, στα παιδιά, στην αγωγή" μας είπε.

Να εστιάσουμε, λοιπόν, στην "αγωγή του ήχου" - θα συνοψίσω, μετά αυτήν την ελεύθερη απόδοση και από μνήμης αναφορά στα λόγια που μας είπε ο Murrey Schafer, στο 1ο Συνέδριο Ακουστικής Οικολογίας, στην Κέρκυρα.

Ο Schafer μας παρότρυνε, λοιπόν, ανοιχτά να κάνουμε την ουσιαστική στροφή στον ήχο, πρώτα απ' όλα μέσα στην τάξη.

"Σώπα δάσκαλε ν'ακούσουμε το πουλί", είναι μια σχεδόν εμβληματική φράση, που μου παρέδωσε με πολλή μέριμνα, όταν πρωτοψηλάφιζα το θέμα, ο Γιάννης, δάσκαλος, διδάκτορας της Μουσικής Εκπαίδευσης.

Ο μικρός καζαντζακικός ήρωας, που την άρθρωσε, αξίωσε τότε με ευθύτητα το ηχοτοπίο του. Στον ίδιο χώρο - το σχολείο - τώρα μας προτείνεται να επανέλθουμε "θεσμικά" στον ήχο. Να μην αγνοήσουμε τους ήχους του "χωριού" μας, κυρίως τώρα που διανθίστηκαν καθώς - o McLuhan το είπε από το '60 - το χωριό μας έγινε "πλανητικό"...

Evi, at the conference, told us that birds sing for only three reasons: a danger situation (danger), to attract the opposite sex (love), to keep in touch (contact).
